Burly 1.8.0: Tor Joins the Picker

Burly 1.8.0 adds Tor Browser to the picker. Choose Tor when a link belongs there, without copying and pasting the URL. It works in private mode too.

Matt Senter is an independent Mac developer who designs, builds, and ships small native apps end to end. He built Burly to send every link on his own Mac to the right browser profile, including Safari profiles, which most routers cannot reach, and he writes these pages from that first-hand use.

A glowing link enters a violet browser window with an onion symbol beneath an Arctic aurora.

Choose Tor at the click

With Tor Browser installed and Burly set as your default browser picker, click a link and choose Tor. Burly hands the URL to Tor Browser’s single profile. If Tor has not connected yet, the link waits on its connection page and loads after you connect.

Private mode, without an extra step

Tor stays available when you hold your private-window key, Shift by default, because every Tor Browser window is already private. You do not need a separate private profile. See the private-window guide for the shortcut settings.

A note on privacy

Burly delivers the link; it does not make the link anonymous. A tracking URL can still identify you.

Also in 1.8.0

Arc, Dia, and ChatGPT Atlas now show their own names in the picker instead of “Current Profile”. Download Burly 1.8.0, read the release notes, or explore supported browsers.
