Release Notes

What changed in each version of Burly, newest first. Burly updates itself, so you get these as they ship. Need a hand with something? See Help.

Burly 1.5.0

Burly now speaks your language.

New

  • Burly follows your Mac’s system language: Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, with English as the fallback.
  • A new Accessibility pane in Settings. The Reduce animations option lives there now.

Improved

  • When a Chromium browser is already running, a profile link goes straight to it. No more multi-second stall and second bouncing Dock icon after Chrome updates itself.

Fixed

  • Safari profiles and Arc windows did not open when macOS was set to a language other than English. They now work in every language.

Burly 1.4.0

You can now become a Supporter.

New

  • A one-time Supporter license hides the promotions in the picker. Nothing else is locked: every other feature stays free.
  • Activate your license with one click after buying, or paste it into Settings > Supporter. It is checked on your Mac, with no account and no network call.
  • The Other Projects pane in Settings now includes Highwire, Orgabot, SeedMatrix and Weatherling.

Burly 1.3.0

Choose where a skipped link goes, and Arc works properly.

New

  • Settings > Bypass has a new “What to open” option: the last profile you used, or a specific browser profile. Turn on Invert as well and every link opens there unless you hold your modifier key to choose.
  • If that profile is no longer available, Burly shows the picker with a note instead of quietly opening a different one.

Fixed

  • Picking Arc no longer shows an “Arc is already open” alert. Arc links now open in Arc’s current profile.
  • Links no longer get lost when Arc has to start first or has no windows open. Burly waits for a real Arc window, and opens one if it has to, before handing over the link.

Burly 1.2.0

A roomier Settings window and a smoother default-browser setup.

New

  • The picker sometimes shows a small, clearly marked promotion for one of my other apps. It never appears twice in a row, choosing it never counts as your last-used profile, and Burly makes no network request to show it.

Improved

  • The Settings window is resizable and opens taller.
  • The Browsers tab shows either a permission notice or your profile list, not both squeezed together.

Fixed

  • Making Burly the default browser asked you to confirm twice. Now it asks once, and Settings updates as soon as you do.
  • The link to the default browser setting opened the wrong pane of System Settings.
  • A profile photo that can no longer be read now falls back to the browser icon instead of a blank space.

Burly 1.1.3

Faster Chrome launches and a clearer first-run setup.

Improved

  • Chrome profile links open faster, especially when Chrome is not running yet.
  • The Safari setup step tells you exactly how to turn on Accessibility for Burly, then shows the Safari profiles it found with a button to detect them again.
  • The Files & Folders step explains that you need to expand Burly’s entry to switch on each browser.

Fixed

  • Choosing Quit & Reopen after granting Full Disk Access during setup no longer makes Burly vanish before the permission takes effect.
  • The Safari setup step no longer sends you back to System Settings while you are reading it.

Burly 1.1.2

Local HTML files, and help when macOS blocks profile access.

New

  • Double-click a local HTML file in Finder and the picker lets you choose a browser profile for it. Before, the file went nowhere.
  • Newer versions of macOS can block Burly from reading other browsers’ data. Burly now notices, keeps your known Chrome, Edge, Brave and Firefox profiles working, and shows you how to allow access in Files & Folders.

Improved

  • The first Chrome profile link after Burly has been idle for a while is now as fast as the rest.

Burly 1.1.1

An easier way back to the Accessibility permission.

New

  • A permission card in Settings lets you request Accessibility access again after you have dismissed the hint in the Browsers pane.

Burly 1.1.0

Burly now keeps itself up to date.

New

  • Automatic updates. When a new version is ready, the menu bar icon shows an arrow and the menu offers to install it. Every update is signed and verified before it installs, and you can turn this off with Keep Burly up to date in Settings.

Burly 1.0.4

A fix for a crash on launch.

Fixed

  • Burly 1.0.3 crashed as soon as it launched on most Macs.

Burly 1.0.3

Global hotkeys, profile emoji and photos, and more browsers.

New

  • Global hotkeys: hold the prefix (Hyper by default) and press a profile’s key to open it from anywhere, without a link.
  • An Open New Tab in… submenu in the menu bar lists every profile with its hotkey.
  • Give each profile an emoji and a color so you can spot it in the picker at a glance.
  • Signed-in Chrome profiles show their Google account photo in the picker.
  • Support for Dia, Comet and Opera.
  • A one-click Safari step during setup.

Improved

  • Setup moves on by itself once Burly is your default browser.

Fixed

  • The bypass now opens the profile you chose during setup instead of always the last one you used.
  • The Settings and setup windows no longer flash when the picker opens.

Burly 1.0.2

Smooth scrolling in Safari again.

Improved

  • Burly finds your Safari profiles even when Safari is closed.

Fixed

  • Safari scrolled sluggishly the whole time Burly was running. Burly now only touches Safari’s menus when you open a link in a Safari profile or ask it to refresh.

Burly 1.0.1

A fix for Safari links when Safari is closed.

Fixed

  • Opening a Safari profile link while Safari was closed showed a false error and left an empty extra window behind.

Burly 1.0.0

The first release of Burly.

New

  • Burly becomes your default browser and opens a radial picker under your cursor for every link you click.
  • It finds your profiles in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Arc, Chromium, Firefox and Safari, and keeps the list current on its own.
  • Keyboard first: arrow keys, Return, a hotkey for every profile, and 0 for the one you used last.
  • Hold a modifier key to skip the picker and open your last-used profile, or invert that so a plain click skips it.
  • Reorder or hide profiles, launch at login, and reduce animations.
  • Every link is handled on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere.
